It all started as an experiment. The wisest and most powerful Ghoul mages had found a way to send themselves through space and time, and discovered many interesting worlds besides their own. Some were already claimed by various beings, and proved dangerous to the travelers. Some were not habitable, even with the powerful magic the Ghouls had at their disposal. A few were found to be both livable and safe enough to explore...and not a moment too soon.
The ego of the Ghoul High-Priests had risen to such a level that they thought they could master the Elder Gods of the Universe. Despite the warnings from the Guardians, the Priests erected a giant summoning circle, and proceeded to gather the reagents and objects needed to bring the Elders under control. As the story goes, the strain of the summoning was too much for them. One of the Priests collapsed during the casting, and the Elder Gods all of a sudden had an open gate into the Ghouls homeworld.
Death followed. The screams of tortured souls filled the once pleasant sky as the Elders consumed the poor Ghouls. With not much time to spare, the Council of Mages quickly decided to attempt a mass portal of the survivors to one of the newfound worlds. Only a few thousand in the capital city were left alive and sane, and with a crackle of magic, they left everything they'd known behind and appeared in the untouched forest of a new land.
Luckily, a series of caves was found near the landing spot, providing cover and the beginnings of a new city for the Ghouls. However, back on their home world, residual traces of the hastily created portal were being studied by the Elder Gods.
The ghouls realized something was wrong when a small child ran into the homecaves screaming about a strange winged beast deep in the caverns. The Council realized that the creature described could only be a nightgaunt, and that the Elder Gods had found some way to track them down.
They knew they had no hope of controlling the powers of the Gods...the screams of their families during the failed attempt was still fresh in their ears. A consult with the Guardians resulted in a unique plan. With the help of the Guardians and both the Mages and Priests of the High Council, a prison would be constructed, and at the bottom would be placed a summoning circle. The hope was to reopen the gate to the homeworld, allowing the Elders to swarm through, but into the magical prison. If it was meant to be, the ancient Gods would be trapped inside.
Aeris of the White Seal completed the summoning circle at the base of the prison, and was then summoned out by the Guardian chosen to watch the Gate. The two combined their powers to seal the magical Gate, locking it shut with a powerful prayer made to Drazuk, deity of the Ghouls. Soon, the rumbling and snarling of the Elders evil creatures was felt in the caves...but the Gate held.
All was not good however. While the dense stone and magical runes of the Ghouls kept the Elder Gods and their ilk locked deep under the mountains, the corrupt power of the Gods slowly leaked into the world above them. Animals became hostile. Creatures were warped into strange and dangerous beings. In addition, it seems that others occupied this world. Some learned from the Ghouls, and embraced the new Knowledge they brought with them. Others were upset at this intrusion, and fought the Ghouls every chance they had.
The evil of the Elder Gods and the Magic of the Ghouls wove itself deep into the very nature of the world, turning once peaceful creatures into hostile monsters, imbuing the minerals of the earth with magical powers, and creating strange occurrences with the nature of the planet. Despite pleas to Drazuk to bless them with the peace they once knew, these occurrences spread...perhaps to teach the Ghouls a lesson of humility. Eventually the civilized races of the world sent forth adventurers, to explore, contain, assist or even claim these newly released powers for themselves...
